What Is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a healing art which is thousands of years old. It is a science based upon the principle that every part of the body, including glands, organs, bones and muscles has a reflex on the sole of the foot and the palm of the hand. Reflexology stimulates these reflex points bringing over or under balanced parts of the body back into balance. ver time there is a gradual awareness of connection to our body and our Self.

A Short History
The art of reflexology dates back as early as 2330 BC. in Egyptian culture. Reflexology was later refined beginning in 1913 by Ear, Nose & Throat specialist, Dr. Williams H. Fitzgerald. He introduced reflexology therapy as “zone therapy” and wrote "Humanity is awakening to the fact that sickness, in a large percentage of cases, is
an error of body and mind". He found that pressure on certain points not only relieved pain, but relieved the cause of the pain. In 1930, physical therapist, Eunice Ingham further developed Dr. Fitzgerald’s contributions by observing that congestion in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. Reflexology as we know it today emerged from her work.

Direct Benefits
Reflexology allows one to directly benefit from a divine source of primary healing. With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs. Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives. When we live in a healthy state, we are able to think clearer, to act in the most appropriate manner, to move more freely, to comprehend more easily and to allow the wisdom in life to spring forth within us. Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium.
It has been shown to be effective for:

Back Pain
Migraine
Infertility
Arthritis
Sleep disorders
Hormonal imbalances
Sports injuries
Digestive disorders
Stress-related conditions

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After you have completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being. Reflexology does not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

My First Visit
On the first visit, the reflexologist will have a preliminary talk with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. The reflexologist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person. A professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle changes in specific points on the feet, and by working on these points may affect the corresponding organ or system of the body. After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; sometimes people report feeling lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory and is a part of the healing process. For those who do not like their feet to be touched, the hand is an alternative. It is preferable to work the feet as there is a greater surface area devoted to each reflex. The hand’s reflexes are simply more crowded, but equally as efficient.

Maud Joseph
Maud Joseph has been practicing Reflexology for over 30 years. Maud received her Baccalaureate in 1972 and went on to study with the Nuns of the Immaculate Conception in Canada for four years. It was there that she studied Psychoanalysis (how to free the Self from fatigue, depression, stress, insomnia, psychology and sexual trouble, anxiety, emotional chaos, aggressiveness, tension, etc.), Sociology and Theology. In the 1970's, Maud began studying reflexology and nursing. Maud has worked in the field of public nursing and social work. By the mid-1990's she devoted her time primarily to Reflexology allowing her to unite the art and science of healing. She has been a member of the International Institute of Reflexology based in Tampa, Florida since 1996.
Maud is a unique reflexologist who integrates her field of studies including the realm of spiritual anatomy in order to detect illness beyond.
"With the art of Reflexology, we can not only be healed, but also cured. When we heal, there are scars, but when we are cured, there are no traces. Reflexology allows the mental aspect, the spiritual aspect and the physical aspect to be addressed. The physical pain that manifests has been a long time within us. How can we cut a branch of a tree and expect it to live? or stop it from growing?"
In addition, Maud co-hosts and produces the radio program Integrative Wellness at 89.5 FM, WPKN, Bridgeport on Sunday mornings.
